Master of Arts in Education: Reading and Writing Program

Are you interested in improving students’ reading in your classroom, school, and district? The Master of Arts in Education: Reading and Writing program may be just what you are looking for!

Career Outlook: The Master of Arts in Education: Reading and Writing program prepares students to serve as literacy coaches or in other leadership positions within the district. The program is also appropriate for classroom teachers who want to increase their skills as teachers of reading and writing.

Master of Arts in Education: Reading and Writing

The MA degree program is designed to fulfill course requirements for Rank II classification (or for Rank I classification for those with a prior Master’s Degree) and to fulfill the requirements for the Literacy Specialist Endorsement P-12.  The Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board also requires candidates to pass the Praxis Reading Specialist Exam to receive the Literacy Specialist Endorsement. Students who do not take the exam still receive the degree and rank change. The program consists of 30 semester hours of graduate level course work with a minimum of 9 hours in professional education and a minimum of 15 hours of 600 level courses.

Program experiences include coursework in literacy foundations, teaching word study,  assessment and instruction of struggling readers, and leadership experiences in literacy.  Students also choose from electives in areas such as language arts and content area reading and writing. One recent graduate, Sanda Fisher, said, "I love that the Reading & Writing program is so applicable to my everyday classroom teaching.  The classes are practical and developed, so that I am learning how to better myself in the classroom."
