Local Violence, Regional Politics, and State Crisis: Anti-Jewish Riots in Habsburg Galicia in 1898
Daniel Unowsky is Professor of Modern Central and Eastern European History at the University of Memphis, where he has taught since 1999. Dr. Unow
sky received his PhD from Columbia University in 2000. His book, The Pomp and Politics of Patriotism: Imperial Celebrations in Habsburg Austria, 1848-1916 was published by Purdue University Press in 2005. He coedited the volume, The Limits of Loyalty: Imperial Symbolism, Popular Allegiances, and State Patriotism in the Late Habsburg Monarchy which was published by Berghahn Books in 2007. He is currently working on two book projects. Sites of European Antisemitism, 1880-1918, a collection of essays on anti-Semitic local politics and anti-Jewish violence, is under contract with Brandeis University Press and due to be published in 2013. His lecture draws from the second book project, tentatively titled: Hurrah Brothers, Get the Jews!”: The 1898 Anti-Jewish Riots in Western Galicia.

ll proceeds from the banquet will benefit the T. Wayne Beasley Memorial History Scholarship. Once endowed, the Beasley Scholarship will be given to the outstanding rising senior history major. Dr. Beasley taught British and European history in the Murray State Department of History from 1965 to 2008. One hallmark Beasley was known for was a strong commitment to undergraduate students. His colleagues created the scholarship after his death in 2008 to honor the memory of a dedicated teacher and colleague. The fund has grown quickly due to support from Wayne’s daughters and former students.
The cost of the banquet is $40 per person; reservations are required by March 24.
