We will cover a range of poems, short stories, and essays so as to improve our abilities to read carefully and analytically, write imitative and original work, and appreciate the beauty and complexity of literature. We will investigate the "dirt" (our own lives and the events of the world around us) from which good writing grows, the devices that good writing utilizes, and the overall designs that good writing achieves. Students will be given weekly reading and writing assignments, and several writing assignments will be discussed and critiqued in a friendly, laid-back, workshop environment. All needed materials will be provided in class.
