College Study Skills Courses

- REA 095, Reading Workshop, is a one-hour,
load-credit course required for entering community college students.
REA 095 emphasizes basic comprehension skills and active reading
strategies. It is designed to complement the COM 161 text and the
assigned readings for ENG 095.
- REA 100, Fundamental Reading Skills, is a
one-hour, load-credit course designed to prepare students for college
level reading through comprehension practice and vocabulary strategies.
The course is required for students with reading ACT scores of 17 and
below.
- REA 120, College Study Skills, is a one-hour,
elective-credit course recommended for those who score 17 or below on
the ACT reading section, who have been out of school for several years,
or who are uncertain that their reading and study skills are adequate
for college-level courses.
- REA 121, Advanced College Study Skills, is a
one-hour, elective-credit course designed to further strengthen reading
and study skills. To provide course specific instruction, REA 121 is
taken in conjunction with CIV 101 during the fall semesters and with CIV
102 during spring semesters.

- ENG 095, Writing Workshop, is a three-hour, load
credit writing skills course which emphasizes sentence structure and
development of ideas in paragraphs and essays. This course is required
for entering restricted-status students.
- ENG 100, Basic Writing, is a three-hour, load
credit, computer-assisted course required for those whose English ACT
score is 17 or below. It is recommended for those who have been out of
school for several years or who feel insecure about their writing
skills.
- ENG 111/112, Fundamental Writing Skills, is a
one-hour, elective credit course designed to further strengthen writing
skills. ENG 111 must be taken concurrent with ENG 101 and ENG 112
concurrent with ENG 102.

- MAT 095, Fundamental Mathematics Skills, is a
one-hour, load credit course offering supplemental instruction for MAT
100. MAT 100 is a corequisite.
- MAT 100, Developmental Math, is a three-hour,
load-credit course required for those whose Math ACT score is 17 or
below. It is recommended for those who have been out of school for
several years, or who feel insecure about their basic math and beginning
algebra skills.

- COM 161, Introduction to Public Speaking, is a
three-hour credit course required for entering restricted-status
students. COM 161 emphasizes organization and presentation of ideas
through participation in frequent speech activities. Students present
speeches to inform, persuade, and entertain.
