Sportsmanship
Being a part of an educational institution, the Campus Recreation
Office works hard to encourage and reinforce basic standards of
sportsmanship, cooperation, and respect for others. Clearly, sporting
contests are important, but the importance should not be so overriding
that players lose sight of appropriate behavior.
The
playing field is not a venue for physical or verbal abuse for the
players, officials, or spectators. In order to encourage proper conduct
before, during and after a scheduled contest officials, supervisors,
and administrative personnel, will make decisions on whether to warn,
penalize or eject players, teams and / or fans for unsportsmanlike
conduct.
Participants, coaches, and spectators that chose
to participate in unsportsmanlike conduct directed towards an opponent,
staff personnel, or official, may be ejected from that contest or
future contests.
Officials or staff personnel of the
Campus Recreation Office may administer the ejection. An ejection may
occur before, during or after a game.
Examples of
unsportsmanlike behavior include, but are not limited to: excessive
swearing, two technical fouls, flagrant actions towards an opponent,
staff personnel, or officials, trash talking, inciting a fight, or
fighting.
Any individual ejected from a contest, as a
result of unsportsmanlike conduct automatically suspends them from all
competition until reinstated.
To be reinstated, the
participant must schedule a meeting with the Assistant Vice President
of Student Affairs before their next scheduled game.
Failure
to make arrangements for a meeting will result in the participant
forfeiting his / her rights to compete in any further contests.
Sportsmanship Rating System
This scale is intended to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct by both individuals and teams.
After
every game, teams will be rated by the supervisor in charge according
to sportsmanship displayed. Ratings will be posted outside the Campus
Recreation Office the following morning. The following system will be
used.
A: 10 points will be awarded to a
team which demonstrates extremely good sportsmanship and maintains an
attitude of complete cooperation.
B: 8 points will be awarded to a team if there is no incidence of poor sportsmanship beyond reason.
C:
6 points will be awarded to a team when unsportsmanlike conduct is not
present in a game except for minor infractions. A team will receive
this score or lower, depending on the sport for:
- A technical foul in basketball
- An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in football
- A verbal warning issued in Softball, Volleyball, or Soccer
D: 2 points will be awarded to a team:
-
When a player or coach is ejected for abusive remarks, (ejection
carries a 2 game suspension and a meeting with the Coordinator)
- If players persist in questioning the officials, or if any player repeatedly argues with an official
- If spectators, clearly associated with the team fail to cooperate with the official
E: 0 points will be awarded to a team:
- If a player or coach is ejected for any physical, or attempted physical action taken towards an opponent, official or staff.
- If a player is so antagonistic to an official or staff that the game cannot be played with proper order and control
- If a player disregards a warning of unnecessary roughness
A
team may receive an "E" without a player being ejected. Depending upon
the circumstances of each incident, this sheet may be amended by the
Campus Recreation Coordinator.
General Season Requirements:
Teams are required to maintain at least 4.5 average throughout the
season and a rating of 7.0 is required to win a division or be eligible
for playoffs
Requirements for Playoffs:
If a team has two players ejected during the playoffs, either one game
or over the period of playoff games, the team is disqualified from
further play.
Any coach or player that leaves the
sideline / bench during a contest to engage in an altercation will be
suspended for the remainder of the season. Spectators who enter the
playing field will be banned from future activities and other action
may be taken against the team. Leaving the bench area will also result
in a team forfeit and disqualification from the tournament. Anyone
involved in fighting will be directed to the Student Affairs office for
further university disciplinary actions.
Suspensions
will not begin until the player in question has met with the
Coordinator or the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs. If
the person in question fails to arrange a meeting, they will then
forfeit their reinstatement and will be suspended for one academic year.
Each
activity will have rules and regulations specific to that sport. It is
strongly recommended that an activity sheet be picked up from the
Campus Recreation Office prior to the beginning of the season.
IGNORANCE OF THE RULES IS NEVER AN EXCUSE!
