The two Honors Sequences listed below replace the University Studies requirement for all students receiving the Honors Diploma. Prerequisites and courses specified by the major course of study must still be completed, and students who do not finish the requirements for the Honors Diploma must complete a University Studies sequence as required by their major. Honors Program students must successfully complete at least one Honors seminar each semester until the sequence is finished. Exceptions must be approved by the Honors Director. Students also have to maintain a 3.2/4.0 GPA to receive the Honors Diploma.


B.A., B.M., or BIS Degrees (47-48 Credit Hours)

HON 099 Freshman Orientation for Honors Students (1 Hour) This course is required for incoming students who have not declared a major. Students who have declared a major should enroll in the departmental orientation class designed for the declared major.
ENG 104 Honors Composition and Research (4 Hours)

One of the following fine arts electives:
HON 161 Honors Seminar in Visual Arts (3 Hours)
HON 162 Honors Seminar in Music (3 Hours)
HON 163 Honors Seminar in Theatre (3 Hours)

HON 164 Honors Seminar in Fine Arts and Culture Abroad (3 Hours)

 

HON 201 Honors Seminar in Soc. Science I (3 Hours)
HON 202 Honors Seminar in Soc. Science II (3 Hours)
HON 251 Honors Seminar in Lit. and Philosophy I (3 Hours)
HON 252 Honors Seminar in Lit. and Philosophy II (3 Hours)

HON 261 Honors Seminar in Science (3 Hours)
Prerequisites: Four hours of lab sciences from the University Studies electives.
Or
HON 262 Honors Seminar in Mathematics (3 Hours)
Prerequisites: One mathematics course from the University Studies electives.
HON 351 Honors Seminar in International Affairs (3 Hours)
HON 437 Senior Honors Thesis (3 Hours)

Additional Requirements for the Honors Diploma

Competency in Mathematics - The student must complete three hours of mathematics chosen from the University Studies mathematics category. This course can serve as the prerequisite for HON 262.

And

One Lab Science - The student must complete one lab science chosen from the University Studies science category. This course can serve as the prerequisite for HON 261.

Foreign Language Competency - 12 hour sequence (excluding 105) in a foreign language culminating in at least a 202 level course - Example: SPA 101, SPA 102, SPA 201, SPA 202

Study Abroad

Students must participate in a year, semester, or summer study abroad program. Courses taken abroad may be used towards the Honors Sequence, foreign language competency, major, or minor.

Prerequisites: One mathematics course from the University Studies electives.

HON 351 Honors Seminar in International Affairs (3 Hours)
HON 437 Senior Honors Thesis (3 Hours)

Foreign Language Competency - 6 hour sequence (excluding 105) in a foreign language culminating in at least a 102 level course - Example: SPA 101, SPA 102

9 Hours of Science, Math, or Language - These must be additional courses to those mentioned above; students should consult their major advisors in deciding which courses to take, as specific courses are often needed to fulfill general education stipulated requirements for specific majors.

Study Abroad

Students must participate in a year, semester, or summer study abroad program. Courses taken abroad may be used towards the Honors Sequence, foreign language competency, major, or minor.
