MSU Reading Experience

The purpose of the MSU Reading Experience is

to provide a common academic experience for incoming freshmen
to introduce students to intellectual life at, and academic expectations of, Murray State University
to foster an active awareness of, and appreciation for, diversity.
to create a greater sense of community among students, faculty, and staff
to establish an appreciation for reading and participating in cultural events

Book Selection Criteria*

presents intellectually challenging ideas appropriate for first-year students.
incorporates interdisciplinarity
fosters respect for diversity (race, gender identity, socio-economic class, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, ability) and community
encourages critical thought, inquiry, writing, and discussion

*These criteria should be used to inform deliberations and selection, keeping in mind that some selections may only meet a majority of the criteria.
