MSU Reading Experience
The purpose of the MSU Reading Experience is
- to provide a common academic experience for incoming freshmen
- to introduce students to intellectual life at, and academic expectations of, Murray State University
- to foster an active awareness of, and appreciation for, diversity.
- to create a greater sense of community among students, faculty, and staff
- to establish an appreciation for reading and participating in cultural events
Book Selection Criteria*
- presents intellectually challenging ideas appropriate for first-year students.
- incorporates interdisciplinarity
- fosters respect for diversity (race, gender identity, socio-economic class, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, ability) and community
- encourages critical thought, inquiry, writing, and discussion
*These criteria should be used to inform deliberations and selection, keeping in mind that some selections may only meet a majority of the criteria.
