If you know you have already submitted current documentation regarding your learning disability and applied to use the services provided through the SSLD Office, talk with you instructors before the semester begins.
Do not hesitate to seek help. It is critical that you link up with campus support before you fall behind in your work. Here are some suggestions for making the semester run more smoothly: - Set realistic goals and priorities for course work.
- Become knowledgeable and comfortable with describing your disability so you can advocate for yourself with faculty.
- Do not try to keep your schedule in your head - use only one calendar or planner to keep up with important dates, assignment deadlines, and appointments.
- Sit toward the front of the classroom to maximize your contact and reduce distractions.
- Tape record class lectures and listen to the tapes to review and refresh your written notes.
- Make notes of any questions you might have so you can find the answers before the next exam.
- Break down large assignments into smaller sections so you can estimate how long the whole assignment will take to complete, as well as when you should start working on it.
- Talk to your professor, your Academic Mentor, or a SSLD staff member if your are having trouble or feeling overwhelmed.
