Murray State University has been involved since the inception of the program in 1999. The program provides a great opportunity for MSU students to get hands-on experience managing investment funds for TVA. Our students actively manage TVA funds by designing long-term investment strategies, placing trades, and providing performance reports to TVA. The students learn how to manage real money and all the requirements that come along with it. It is a tremendous learning experience. Our students are “real” portfolio managers, and are held to similar guidelines as TVA’s professional money managers. To date, TVA has allocated approximately $400,000 to MSU to manage. In just seven years, the portfolio has more than doubled in value, currently closing in on $1,000,000.

Participating students are required to perform comprehensive, professional security analyses that result in asset valuation. Approximately 350-400 MSU students have participated in the program since its inception. The objective is to find undervalued securities to add to the portfolio. Murray State University has been rewarded for the spectacular performance of the MSU student managed portfolio. For our students’ efforts, MSU has been awarded $120,000 in prize money.
