Come on in!  We are open Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM in the Summer and 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM during the academic year.  Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are encouraged.  To schedule an appointment with an advisor, visit our appointment page here.  We can help narrow down your options and advise on course registration, funding, etc.

How to Apply

Apply on our online system, Horizons before the deadline listed below.

Please take a look around Horizons to familiarize yourself with what programs we are offering.  If you have any questions, contact the study abroad office at msu.studyabroad@murraystate.edu or by phone at (270) 809-2277.  When you have decided which program you are interested in, register on Horizons and click “Apply.”  You will only need to register and apply once per program.  The scholarship application is also on the Horizons system, and you will have access to it once you have completed the application for your program.

What you'll need to apply

  • MSU Study Abroad Application
  • Study Abroad Budget Sheet
  • $50 Application Fee (must be paid online on Horizons application via credit or debit card)
  • Unofficial MSU Transcript from myGate - you can download this from the Academics tab.
  • Personal Statement Uploaded into Horizons.
    • In a well-written and well-thought-out essay, discuss the following topics.  Research will be required to answer some of the questions. 500 word maximum.
    • Why do you want to study abroad?
    • Why have you selected this particular study abroad program and course(s)?
    • In preparing for this program, discuss what have you learned about the country or countries in which you'll be studying abroad.
    • Explain the importance of your major and/or the field you'll be studying in today's society in your study abroad program's location.
  • Student Goals Essay Uploaded into Horizons.
    • Please describe in detail your personal, academic, professional, and cultural goals for your study abroad experience and the steps you plan to take to achieve those goals.  Use complete sentences and structure as an essay.  500 word maximum.
  • Letter of Recommendation from an MSU faculty member, requested through the Horizons system
  • Emergency Contact Information
  • If you are applying to a program hosted by one of our providers (CCSA, KIIS, ISA, CEA, Lorenzo de Medici, IBS, etc.) or an exchange partner, you will complete a second application.  See Horizons for more details.
  • TIP: you do NOT have to have a passport at the time you apply

Acceptance to the program

After you have completed the online study abroad application through Horizons, you'll be notified via email of your acceptance to the program and the next steps of the application to be completed. After acceptance, you will have several weeks to compile the list below.  Items turned in after the Post-Acceptance deadline will incur a hold on your MSU account. 

Please remember that MSU application approval may not indicate approval with your third-party provider (CCSA, KIIS, ISA, CEA, Lorenzo de Medici, IBS, etc.)

After you have been accepted to your program, you'll upload to Horizons:

  • Digital photo of your face for emergencies
  • Copy of your passport
  • Insurance Enrollment (You must do this for yourself online and upload a copy of your card to the Horizons system)
  • Emergency medical information
  • Flight itinerary

Eligibility Requirements

In general, there is no set GPA requirement for most study abroad programs, though some programs and providers may set their own minimum GPA.  Students must be in Good Academic Standing at the time of their application to be considered.

Students with a disciplinary history from MSU or another institution will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Students must be 18 years old & up.

Students must have successfully completed at least one semester on campus before being fully admitted to a study abroad program.  Students can apply for a study abroad program before completing a full semester, but they will be conditionally admitted to the program pending their grade report from the first semester.

 Winter 2015

Application, Scholarship, and Withdrawal Deadline
September 11, 2015

The Scholarship Application can be completed on the Horizons system after your program application is complete.  Click this link for more information on scholarship availability and eligibility requirements.

The Withdrawal Deadline gives participants the opportunity to withdraw the study abroad application before any money has been spent by Murray State to reserve airline tickets, accommodations, and other necessary logistics.  If a participant knows they will not be able to participate in the program for any reason (financial, academic, personal, etc.) they should withdraw by the withdrawal deadline in order to avoid incurring any charges to their MSU account.  Please see the Study Abroad Policies & Procedures for the complete withdrawal policy.

 

Post-Acceptance Deadline
October 9, 2015

The Post-Acceptance Deadline is the date by which the final step of the Horizons application must be completed, including (but not limited to) uploading a photo, copy of your passport, flight itinerary, emergency medical information, and insurance card.  Any late items not on Horizons by this date will incur a hold on your account.

 

Orientation
Friday, November 13, 2015, 4:30 pm, Location TBA

There is a mandatory pre-departure orientation for all study abroad programs.  The date of your mandatory orientation corresponds to the term you are studying abroad.  See below for dates, locations, and times.  Parents and loved ones are encouraged to attend orientation with their student participants.

A part of orientation will be online through the Canvas system.  You will receive more details about the online orientation in the email that states you have been approved for your program.

 Times and locations are tentative and subject to change.

Spring Break 2016
