All MSU students receiving Murray State scholarships will be required to write a thank you letter to the scholarship benefactor(s).

We require thank you letters as a way of helping the institution thank our very generous benefactors.    Receiving a thank you letter is important to our scholarship benefactors because it shows them the impact they are having on our students.

Thank You Letter Tips

You will be thanking the scholarship benefactor, so the inside salutation of the letter should be addressed to scholarship benefactor (i.e. Dear Smith Scholarship Benefactor:), NOT to the scholarship committee.  Please do not thank the benefactor for choosing you as the recipient as you were chosen by the scholarship awarding committee.

Thank the benefactor for providing the scholarship through their generous donation.  Tell them how the scholarship is making a difference in your life.  Be sure to express your appreciation for their generosity and for being honored as this year's recipient.

Tell a little bit about yourself such as where you are from and what activities you are involved in at school (this can include activities from high school if you are a recent high school graduate).  Be sure to also list why you chose to attend Murray State University and what you plan to study while at MSU.

Tell the benefactor about your future plans after graduating from Murray State.

If you are receiving a renewable scholarship and have sent a thank you letter in a previous year, please provide an update on anything new in your life or educational/career goals since writing the last letter.

Thank You Letter Guidelines

Pay close attention to use correct grammar, spelling, and organization of your letter.  A well-written letter is not only a reflection on you, but it also reflects on Murray State University.

Thank you letters must be typed and signed by the student.  If you do not have access to a computer/printer, please contact the Office of Development at 877-282-0033 (toll-free) or 270-809-3737 or the Office of Financial Aid/Scholarship at 800-272-4678 ext 4 (toll-free) or 270-809-3225.

Although you have written your letter(s) to the scholarship benefactor, please address the envelope and mail it to the below name and address.  The Office of Development will make sure your letter is forwarded to the benefactor on your behalf.

If you receive multiple MSU scholarships, you must submit individual thank you letters for each award you receive.  In addition, if you receive a renewable scholarship, you must submit a thank you letter to the benefactor each year you receive the scholarship.  Should you have multiple thank you letters to submit, please note that you can send them all in one envelope.

Thank you letters for scholarship awards made during the 2013-2014 academic year must be submitted to the above address no later than September 1, 2013.

Students may be asked to re-submit a thank you letter if it does not meet the guidelines.  If letters are not received by the deadline, a spring 2014 class registration hold may be placed on your account.
