MBA Admission Requirements

MBA Admission Requirements for Domestic Students:

An undergraduate degree is required, or will be earned in the next few months, before you can apply.

Unconditional admission:

All applicants must take either the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or request a waiver if one of the following criteria can be met:

  • earned graduate degree
  • undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher in certain fields
  • undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher in certain fields with two years of professional work experience

If an exam waiver is not granted, an applicant must attain an acceptable score using the following formulas that combine the undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) and the score on either the GMAT or GRE.

Applicants with above a 3.0 must achieve a minimum GMAT score of 400 or a minimum score on the GRE of 286. Applicants with undergraduate GPAs of less than 3.0 on the 4.0 scale need GMAT scores that are higher than 400, or GRE scores higher than 286. For unconditional admission to the program, an applicant must satisfy one of two formulas: GMAT users: (200 x UGPA) + GMAT > 1,000 or GRE users: GRE > 321 - (11.66 x GPA) (Combined quantitative and verbal sections only.)

An alternative formula is used if an applicant’s grade point average on the last 60 semester hours (LGPA) of undergraduate work is 0.25 points or more above the applicant’s overall UPGA: 200 x (LGPA-0.25) + GMAT > 1,000.

Conditional admission:

An applicant who has not taken the GMAT or GRE will be granted conditional admission to the M.B.A. program if the applicant’s UGPA is at least 2.75 (on a 4.00 scale), or if the applicant’s LGPA is at least 3.00. This student must take the GMAT/GRE within two months of receiving the conditional admission letter.

MBA Admission Requirements for International Students:

An undergraduate degree is required, or will be earned in the next few months, before you can apply.

Unconditional admission:

International students are not admitted conditionally, meaning you must take and pass the GMAT or GRE BEFORE coming to the United States. All international applicants must take the GRE or GMAT before you apply (unless you are already admitted to an MSU ESL or AEP program). These exams cannot be waived in lieu of work experience. At the time of taking either the GMAT or the GRE and making the appropriate score (see the following section), ensure that you have Murray State University as your score recipient. Our code is 1494.

For international students with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better, the minimum/required scores are 400 out of 800 for the GMAT, and 286 out of 340 for the GRE. Students with GPAs that are less than 3.0 will need higher GMAT and GRE scores. For unconditional admission to the program, an applicant must satisfy one of two formulas: GMAT users: (200 x UGPA) + GMAT > 1,000 or GRE users: GRE > 321 - (11.66 x GPA) (combined quantitative and verbal sections only.)

Also, an applicant whose native language is not English or who did not graduate from an English-speaking college or university must score a minimum of 20 in each of the four areas examined in the TOEFL (writing, reading, listening, and speaking). Equivalent scores on the IELTS are also accepted.
