Libraries are not just for books any more—technology is just as important. Overall, school libraries are about literacy—21st century literacy—reading all kinds of documents, both print and online, and knowing how to use them to answer questions and support your research. If your passion isn’t just about Winnie the Pooh and Harry Potter, but also includes wikis and Facebook, if helping kids learn and learn how to learn excites you, then library media is for you.
The current library media program at Murray State University requires a master’s degree and a teaching certificate. The program, together with the Praxis II for school library media, will qualify you for certification as a school media librarian for P-12 in Kentucky. You will take 30 hours of courses at the graduate level, most of them online, but also including 3 practicum courses, where you work in a school library under the supervision of an experienced certified school media librarian.
Career Outlook: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for librarians is expected to be “as fast as the average and job opportunities are expected to be favorable, as a large number of librarians are likely to retire in the coming decade.” (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition).
