Dr. David Allen, Director of the Center for Environmental Education, is an assistant professor with the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education at Murray State University. He started as director in August of 2013. He teaches undergraduate courses in measurement and evaluation and graduate courses in educational research and environmental education. The graduate environmental educations courses are part of the endorsement in environmental education. David recently returned to academia following twelve years in the educational assessment industry where he developed K-12 science assessments. David earned a Ph.D. in School Improvement from Texas State University-San Marcos, a Master of Science in Environmental Science from Oklahoma State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Science Education from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma, and an Associate of Science from Connors State College in Oklahoma. David taught in the Oklahoma public schools for ten years, where he maintains a current teaching certificate. During his tenure as an Oklahoma educator, he was twice honored with a district teacher of the year award. David’s interests include environmental education, increasing the presence of science in early childhood education, and student motivation in education. David has also met with members of the Japan Environmental Education Forum and several professors of environmental education and sustainability in Tokyo in efforts to develop student environmental education experiences in Japan.
David is one of five people in Kentucky that are trainers for the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education Guidelines. He is also certified trainer for Project Learning Tree and Project Underground. David serves on several boards and committees, including: the board of directors of the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education, editorial board for the Journal of Research Initiatives, advisory committee for the Sustainability Science Master of Science program, and the President’s Commission in Campus Sustainability.

Mr. William B. Mitchner - Graduate Assistant
William Mitchner is a graduate assistant in the Center for Environmental Education. William holds a Bachelors degree in Outdoor Recreation and Leisure Services and a Masters degree in Human Development and Leadership and is now working on an Ed.S in Mental Health Counseling. His role in the Center for Environmental Education includes but is not limited to the instruction of the EDU 404 undergraduate Preservice weekends. He also works with the Graduate class weekends and any other necessary tasks within the office for the Center for Environmental Education at Murray State University. William enjoys the outdoors and being one with nature.
