When an area adult education center lost its funding for English instruction, Murray State University’s Department of English and Philosophy students carried on the effort.
While the Mayfield-based Somali Adult Education Center seeks funding, interns in our TESOL program now teach morning and evening English classes. Many Somali students attend morning classes after working the night shift at the nearby Pilgrim’s Pride plant.
“They are quite motivated to learn English,” said undergraduate TESOL program coordinator Dr. Latricia Trites. “This experience has been quite rewarding for our students since they are getting to teach students will real needs.”

Abdullah Alzahrani (center), a Saudi Arabian student in Murray State’s TESOL program, helps Somali immigrants improve their English skills.
