Student Organizations
The Department of Modern Languages offers a variety of extracurricular opportunities that supplement classroom work. Students can hear presentations by guest speakers, attend discussions and colloquia, and avail themselves of a variety of other activities to further their education in language outside the classroom.
Organizations and activities sponsored by the department are:
Alpha Mu Gamma
Advisor: Dr. Fusae Ekida (fekida@murraystate.edu)
Alpha Mu Gamma is the National Honorary Society for Foreign Languages. Alpha Mu
Gamma was established at Los Angeles City College on April 29, 1931. The name "Alpha
Mu Gamma" is composed of the names of the initial Greek letters found in the phrase
"Emf Mouse Glisson", meaning "For the Muse of Languages." Alpha Mu Gamma sponsors
many different activities throughout the year including workshops, artists, and the
Foreign Language Festival in March. There is one initiation ceremony into AMG which
occurs during the Fall Semester. In order to qualify for initiation, a student must
have at least Sophomore standing, have completed a minimum of two semesters of college
foreign language with at least two grades of "A" in unrepeated courses, and have a
minimum overall GPA of 3.00.
ICALA International Cultures and Languages Association (the Foreign Language Club)
Advisor: Dr. Roxane Riegler and Dr. Elena Picech
ICALA's mission is to inform students and community about international languages and cultures in order to foster cultural sensitivity within a social environment accessible to all. It is open to all students interested in foreign languages and cultures. ICALA has periodic meetings and social activities during the school year and organizes events such as the Tent City Bratwurst Sale at Homecoming, Oktoberfest, Mardi Gras, and the Cinco de Mayo end of the year party. Dues are very reasonable ($20 per year). Each spring the club solicits applications from active members for ICALA Scholarships. The number of scholarships varies each year.
