Pre-Veterinary

The Department of Biological Sciences at Murray State University offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in biology that gives students all pre-requisites needed to apply to most veterinary schools. The degree pathway for Biology pre-vet students is similar to the pre-medicine/pre-dentistry pathways.

Veterinary schools typically require a 3.0 GPA or above, with at least a C in required pre-requisite courses. In addition, students must work with one or more veterinarians for 400 hours. Kentucky has agreements with 2 veterinary schools, Auburn University and Tuskegee Universities. These schools provide spots for a certain number of KY applicants each year.

For Transfer Students with an Associate's of Science degree

Note, this pathway follows the pre-Biology Curriculum from WKCTC. It assumes that students have taken courses that will transfer as Murray State's BIO 115, BIO 216, BIO 221, BIO 222, CHE 201, CHE 202, MAT 150 and PHY 130/131. See Murray State Transfer Equivalency Tool to help you figure out how courses transfer from your current institution. NOTE: Students wishing to begin Medical School immediately after graduation should take the MCAT in their junior year. Students can take Zoology and Microbiology prior to transferring to Murray State. This will allow them to add additional coursework in their junior year to help prepare them to score well on the MCAT.
