Sigma Xi - The Scientific Research Society

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, is the international honor society of science and engineering. One of the oldest and largest scientific organizations in the world, Sigma Xi has maintained a distinguished history of service to science and society for more than a century. Scientists and engineers, whose research spans the disciplines of science and technology, comprise the membership of the Society. Sigma Xi chapters can be found at colleges and universities, government laboratories, and industry research centers around the world. More than 200 Nobel Prize winners have been members.

The Society is based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Sigma Xi, Murray State University Chapter was chartered in 1978. The chapter received the Chapter Program of Excellence Award in 2013.

Fall Reception/Meeting

During the fall reception, Murray State chapter members will elect the next president of the chapter, review the activities of the past year, and discuss plans for the coming year. 

Murray State and UT Martin Scientific Research Symposium

This research symposium is co-hosted by the Sigma Xi chapters at Murray State and UT Martin to share and discuss their scientific research through oral and poster presentations. This event is held annually in the fall, alternating between the Murray State campus in Murray, KY, and the UT Martin campus in Martin, TN.

Sigma Xi Scientific Research Poster Session and Competition

Poster Competition Coordinator - Dr. Maeve McCarthy

Student researchers present their scientific work during Scholars Week, held annually at Murray State to showcase Murray State student research, scholarly achievement and creative accomplishments. The best graduate and undergraduate posters will be selected. Each presenter and faculty mentor is invited to attend the Sigma Xi Recognition Banquet.

Sigma Xi Recognition Banquet

The recognition banquet is considered the high point of Sigma Xi Murray State Chapter’s annual activities. Student researchers and their faculty mentors are recognized at the banquet. Awards are given for the outstanding student research project, best undergraduate student poster, and best graduate student poster. The highlight of this event is the keynote speech, delivered by an invited distinguished speaker.
