Mission, Vision, and Goals

Mission:
To prepare graduates to successfully challenge the Board of Certification examination and obtain professional employment in athletic training or other health care related industry positions by:
  1. Promoting high levels of professional and ethical standards
  2. Providing an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking skills in clinical practice
  3. Providing opportunities for hands-on clinical experience supported by didactic knowledge
The acquisition of lifelong and service learning skills will enable students to remain current in their field, be successful in graduate school or other professional training, be valued members of their communities, and function in a culturally diverse society.
 
Vision:
To be an exemplary program for promoting evidence-based and interprofessional practice principles as the cornerstone of successful preparation of athletic trainers.
 
Program Goals:
The program seeks to create a positive educational environment and promote quality experiences in order to prepare students to become athletic trainers. To accomplish this, the program has adopted the following goals:
  1. Graduates will engage with patients, the community, and all members of the health care team and promote the athletic training profession (see SLO 1, 3, 5).
  2. Graduates will utilize logic, skills, and a discriminating process that is foundational to clinical decision-making while integrating best evidence in patient care (see SLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
  3. Graduates will address health care needs and serve a diverse environment through interaction with a variety of patient populations, clinical settings and professionals (see SLO 1, 3, 4, 5).
  4. Faculty and clinical preceptors will foster didactic and practical instruction designed to encourage self-learning, and develop clinical reasoning (see PFO 1, 2)
  5. Faculty and clinical preceptors will create culturally rich and career focused clinical experiences designed to meet learning needs (see PFO 1, 2)
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), Personnel/Facility Outcomes (PFOs), and Objectives:
Congruent with the goals of program, the following outcomes are used to provide the program with a framework for collecting and evaluating data to assess overall effectiveness and provide guidance for improving program quality (see Assessment Plan Table).
 
SLO 1    Students can educate participants and manage risks for safe performance and function.
OBJ 1    Students will be able to communicate risks of injury and illness to patients, caregivers, and the public through various techniques.
OBJ 2    Students will be able to evaluate environments and health conditions for safe participation.
 
SLO 2    Students will be able to formulate a clinical diagnosis using evidence-based medicine.
                OBJ 1    Students will be able to determine clinical usefulness of evaluation techniques.
                OBJ 2    Students will be able to create a differential diagnosis list.
 
SLO 3    Students use procedures to meet the standard(s) of care for the injured or ill.
OBJ 1    Students will adhere to standard operating procedures (e.g. American Red Cross, American Heart) for an emergency situation.
OBJ 2    Students will be able to administer treatment for injuries and illnesses.
 
SLO 4    Students will develop individualized programs for optimal performance and function.
                OBJ 1    Students will be able to assess patient status to determine care and readiness to return to activities.
                OBJ 2    Students will be able to perform therapeutic interventions for musculoskeletal conditions.
 
SLO 5    Students can adhere to professional practices and guidelines to ensure individual and organizational well-being.
OBJ 1    Students can operate within professional scope of practice (e.g. ethical, state regulatory, and organizational requirements).
OBJ 2    Students can advocate for the profession of athletic training.
 
PFO 1   Faculty and clinical preceptors will foster an environment for student success.
                OBJ 1    Students are adequately prepared to sit for the BOC exam.
                OBJ 2    Faculty and staff are committed to a quality educational experience for the student.
                OBJ 3    Clinical sites provide exposure to various patient populations and health professions.
 
PFO 2   The program will attract and retain quality students who are successful in their professional careers.
