The Community College at Murray State offers a vareity of courses in the following areas:

College Study Skills Courses

  • REA 095, Reading Workshop, is a one-hour, load-credit, computer-assisted reading course which emphasizes basic comprehension skills and active reading strategies. This course is required for students with reading ACT scores of 15 and below.
  • REA 100, Fundamental Reading Skills, is a one-hour, load credit, computer-assisted course designed to prepare students for college level reading through comprehension practice and vocabulary strategies.  The course is required for students with reading ACT scores of 16 to 19.  It is recommended for those who have been out of school for several years or who feel insecure about their reading comprehension skills.
  • REA 120, College Study Skills, is a one-hour, elective-credit course required for students with reading ACT scores of 16 to 19.  It is recommended for those who have been out of school for several years, or who are uncertain that their study skills are adequate for college-level courses.
  • REA 121, Advanced College Study Skills, a one-hour, elective-credit course designed to further strengthen reading and study skills.  To provide individualized course specific instruction, REA121 should be taken in conjunction with a freshman level University Studies requirement.

English Courses

  • ENG 095, Writing Workshop, is a three-hour, load credit writing skills course which emphasizes sentence structure and development of ideas in paragraphs and essays. This course is required for students with English ACT scores of 14 and below.
  • ENG 100, Basic Writing, is a three-hour, load credit, computer-assisted course required for those whose English ACT score is 15 to 17. It is recommended for those who have been out of school for several years or who feel insecure about their writing skills.
  • ENG 111/112, Fundamental Writing Skills, is a one-hour, elective credit course designed to further strengthen writing skills. ENG 111 must be taken concurrent with ENG 105, and ENG 112 is to offered on a limited basis for additional ENG 105 support.

Math Courses

  • MAT 095, Fundamental Mathematics Skills, is a two-hour, load credit course to refresh math and geometry skills.  This developmental course is required for students with math ACT score of 15 and below.
  • MAT 096, Introductory Algebra, is a three-hour, load-credit course required for those whose Math ACT scores are 16 to 18. It is recommended for those who have been out of school for several years, or who feel insecure about their beginning algebra skills.

Public Speaking Course

  • COM 161, Introduction to Public Speaking,Organization and presentation of ideas through participation in frequent speech activities. Students present speeches to inform, solve problems, and persuade. Communication needs of the individual students are considered and guidance is given by the instructor. 3 hours.
