New Zealand Year
Aimie Knight, Recreation & Leisure Services/Outdoor Recreation major
Where did this experience take place?
I spent a year in Dunedin, South Otago on the south island of New Zealand. I also traveled to Australia and Malaysia.

When did you go and how long was your experience?
June 2002 – June 2003, 1 year

How do you think that this experience has affected you personally?
I learned that the things I was nervous about (going to another country, being completely out of my comfort zone) were nothing to be afraid of. I also learned that I am very open and accepting to other ideas and ways of life. This experience has increased my self-confidence 10 fold.

What did you learn about other cultures?
I learned that other cultures just do things differently. They eat different foods, wear different clothes, work different ways and speak different languages. But people’s values are basically the same all over the world. They all laugh, cry and enjoy life.

What were the main highlights of your experience?
Hiking in New Zealand – the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. The Phi Phi Island in Thailand! The friends I made from other countries.

Why should someone study abroad?
To open their experiences up! To see that America is not the only place on Earth and to understand the way countries, people and cultures are intertwined and must work together. The world is getting smaller and we will all need each other in the future. Understanding and acceptance are the keys!

What are your career plans?
To work in America’s national parks or any place wild. Again, the world is getting smaller and the wild, natural places must be protected and preserved for us to enjoy forever.

How has Murray State University helped you on your way to reaching your goals in life?
MSU has a great financial aid program that allowed me the means to study abroad. The Recreation and Leisure Services program has given me an idea on how recreation specialists are very important in this day and age. The people in recreation are great, too!
