Alumni Awards and Recognition
Distinguished Alumni Award
Established in 1962, the University presents this award annually to alumni who have made meaningful contributions to their profession on a local, state and national level. The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor granted by the Murray State Alumni Association, recognizing alumni who have excelled personally and professionally. Previous Distinguished Alumni award recipients include Pulitzer Prize winning journalists and renowned authors, research scientists and physicians, executives, educators, military leaders and Emmy Award-winning broadcasters.
Golden Horseshoe Award
Established in 1987, this award honors alumni whose dedication to Murray State has contributed to the continued growth and excellence of the University through university-held positions and/or exceptional volunteer support. The honoree’s name is added to the Golden Horseshoe plaque in the Easley Alumni Center.
Distinguished Professor Award
Established in 1964, this student-nominated award recognizes an outstanding faculty member who has had a profound and positive influence on students, both inside and outside of the classroom. The Distinguished Professor is awarded in a surprise classroom visit, receives a $1,000 cash award, and leads the faculty processional at May commencement. The honoree also will have his or her name added to the Distinguished Professor plaque in Faculty Hall.
Nominations are accepted each spring semester from upperclassmen.
Distinguished Researcher Award
Established in 2002, this award acknowledges an outstanding faculty member for his or her excellence in research. The Distinguished Researcher Award signifies the importance of faculty research and its vital role to the growth of Murray State’s educational environment. The honoree receives a $1,000 cash award and will have his or her name added to the Distinguished Researcher plaque in the Easley Alumni Center. The award is granted in one of the following areas: Arts and Literature, Humanities and Social Sciences, or Science, Technology and Mathematics.
Emerging Scholar Award
Established in 2008, this award acknowledges a Murray State faculty member who is in the early stages of his or her career and shows professional promise through superior research or creative work. The Emerging Scholar receives a $1,000 cash award and also has his or her name added to the Emerging Scholar plaque in the Easley Alumni Center.
