Greek life at Murray State University offers a unique opportunity for students to associate in organizations centered around community service, social interaction, leadership, scholarship, and athletics. Your years in college will include many different and exciting experiences, but none will be as complete as the ones you will have by being part of the Greek Community. MSU students are given the opportunity to become involved in our Greek Life, opening doors to success in leadership, scholarship, community service, and friendship.

Sorority and fraternity life provides excellent opportunities for college students to find a home away from home, develop social and leadership skills, and enhance academics. Greek life helps lead its members to be active in student organizations including honor societies, residential colleges, student government, intramural sports, and many other organizations. Within each chapter, members are given the chance to hold offices, be a part of planning committees, develop community service projects, and attend educational programs. Greek life can enhance the college experience with long-lasting friendships and the special bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.

Approximately 12% of the Murray State University student body belongs to a Greek sorority or fraternity. There are three Greek governing councils: the Interfraternity Council (IFC), which governs fraternities; the National Panhellenic Council (NPC), which governs sororities; and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which governs the “Divine Nine” historically African American fraternities and sororities.

Scholarship

Academics are the most important aspect of college life. The Greek chapters place a heavy emphasis on scholarship by implementing programs that help members strive for academic success. Each chapter sets its own scholarship standards to hold an office, etc. Study tables, tutors, scholastic awards and scholarships, and other academic programs are implemented to accomplish academic goals. Furthermore, there are prestigious honor societies like Order of Omega, which recognizes outstanding Greek men and women.

Service

One of the most rewarding aspects of membership is involved in community and philanthropy events that are organized by individual chapters. Each year, the Greek community contributes many hours and dollars to local and national charities. MSU Greeks acknowledge their responsibility to serve and benefit others by volunteering their time and commitment to the community. Working together on these philanthropic projects and events not only benefit worthy causes, but also fosters personal growth and greater unity among Greek members.

Leadership

_________________________________________________

Greek life provides countless opportunities for further exploration and development of leadership skills. Greeks engage in a wide variety of activities that develop abilities such as teamwork, dedication, loyalty, and cooperation. Sorority women and fraternity men serve as leaders of campus through many student organizations. Members of Greek organizations are able to serve as officers within their individual chapters and as executive members of governing councils, as well. When joining the Greek Community, students open up an enormous range of leadership possibilities.

Brotherhood & Sisterhood

_________________________________________________

The most wonderful reward of joining a Greek organization is the bond of brotherhood and sisterhood. Greek life gives your student the chance to meet other students with similar interests, goals, and ideas. This is a unique way for individuals to establish lifelong friendships and expand their circle of friends. A Greek organization is a home away from home where sisters or brothers will always be there for support in times of need. Every member contributes their unique talents to their chapter and is loved and respected for who they are. Whether Greeks are having fun together, working together, studying together, or just hanging out, they know their brothers and sisters make everything about college worthwhile and enjoyable.
