Unless a student meets one of the exemptions listed in the university catalog, he or she is required to purchase a meal plan.

From page 27 in the university catalog:

"All freshmen and sophomores who have not reached their 21st birthday prior to the first day of registration as it appears in the university academic calendar will be required to live in university housing and to purchase one of the university cafeteria meal plans.

Exempted from this requirement are students who are veterans of at least two years of active military service; students who daily commute from the permanent, legal residence of their parents or legal guardian (within a 50 mile radius); students who are married and living with their spouce; students who have resided in a university residential college four semesters, excluding summer terms; and students who have obtained junior status (sixty hours earned) who have enrolled full time at a postsecondary institution for four semesters, excluding summer."

MEAL PLAN EXEMPTIONS ARE RARELY GIVEN. STUDENTS CAN ONLY APPLY FOR MEAL PLAN EXEMPTIONS THE FIRST MONTH OF THE SEMESTER AND MUST REAPPLY EACH SEMESTER IF APPROVED.

Meal plan exemption forms can be downloaded from this Web site (download exemption form) or requested from the Racer Card Office on the first floor of the Curris Center. Please return exemption forms to the Racer Card Office or mail to 101 Curric Center, Murray, KY 42071.

The Food Service director will review the exemption request. Appeals to his decision may be addressed to the assistant vice president of Student Affairs. His decision will be final, with no additional appeals.
