Dr. Guin received his Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) from Mississippi State University in 1979 and received the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1984. He has published papers in a variety of journals in addition to a textbook, chapters in other texts, and a case book.

Through MSU's Small Business Development Center, Dr. Guin has assisted over 70 businesses in the Midwest region in solving a wide variety of financial problems and in raising funds for the businesses . As a private consultant, he has been active in economic development by assisting in raising millions of dollars for both start-up and established businesses. He also has provided testimony as an expert witness in court cases in Kentucky and Tennessee.

A former chair of the department (2000-2003), he has taught internationally in Germany, Poland, and Hong Kong. In addition, he has been awarded both the MSU Board of Regents Award for Teaching Excellence and the College of Business's Outstanding Research Award.
