Dr. Johnston earned Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley, a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, and B.S. degrees in Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and in History from the University of Tennessee at Martin.

His professional experience includes working with three Fortune 500 companies: American Hospital Supply (now part of Cardinal Health), 3M (as a dealer representative), and Caterpillar.
