The jazz program at Murray State University is designed to present the highest level of performance in the idiom while providing a framework of strategies for the aspiring music educator. All types jazz are explored including swing, latin and rock styles. The Big Bands (Jazz Ensemble I and II) are each made up of 5 saxophones (flute and clarinet doublers welcomed), 4 to 5 trumpets, 4 to 5 trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums and latin percussion. Combos are formed at the director's discretion and may include more non-traditional instrumentations. Auditions for all instruments are held during the first week of the semester in the director's office. Drummers may audition in the Jazz or Percussion Suites, if arranged with the director. You may pick up audition materials for your instrument prior to, or during the first week of the semester at Mr. Hill's office (FA 523). Rhythm section members may be asked to play in specific combinations at the first full ensemble rehearsal.

 
 
 
  Jazz Ensemble I

Jazz Ensemble I meets during both fall and spring semesters and performs jazz standards and originals of the highest possible standards in an environment that encourages creativity and improvisation. This group will present one or two concerts per semester, plus other potential performances. Dress black concert attire is required as well as another less formal option.

Jazz Ensemble I rehearses Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:30 to 3:20 pm. 1 hour credit.

 
 
  Jazz Ensemble II

Jazz Ensemble II meets during the spring semester and performs the standards of the jazz literature. Improvisation is taught and encouraged. This group will present two concerts during the semester for which the dress is variable.

Jazz Ensemble II meets Monday and Wednesday from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. 1 hour credit.

 
 
  Jazz Combos

Jazz Combos will be formed by ability level at the director's discretion and will meet in the Jazz Suite at times to be determined. The art of improvisation will be the area of greatest concentration. These groups will perform in various settings on the campus and in the community. Dress will be variable. 1 hour credit.
