Photography
 

  Photography includes basic black and white and color photography, as well as non-silver processes. Additional areas of study may include video and cinematography. Students learn to use a range of tools including the 35mm camera, super 8 or video camera, and darkroom and editing equipment. The program is attractive to students with ambitions in the fine arts, as well as to those with career plans in areas such as graphic design, and commercial and industrial photography.

 

  Classes offered as part of the emphasis include:

  • ART 385 Introduction to Cinematography

  • Techniques and criticism of motion pictures. Basic format in Super-8 or videotape for both class and individual productions. Cameras are not supplied.

  • ART 382 Introduction to Photography I
  • Includes various photographic processes, cameras (structures, use, operation), films (types, use and development) and print development (darkroom techniques). Both technical and compositional aspects are stressed. Criticism and discussion. Cameras are not supplied.

  • ART 383 Photography II
  • Continuation and refinement of technical aspects presented in ART 382 with expanded emphasis on individual investigation. Discussion and criticism. Prerequisite: ART 382.

  • ART 384 Photography III
  • Exploration of personal style and various photographic processes. Discussion and investigation of historical and current photographic concerns and trends. Prerequisite: ART 383.

  • ART 483 Photography IV
  • Investigation of non-traditional and/or new technology related to light-sensitive image-making. Refinement of personal visual direction. Research into new techniques and/or visual trends in society and industry. Prerequisite: ART 384.

  • ART 484 Photography V
  • Concentrated study of selected photographic processes as related to student's professional goals. Individual explorations are to culminate in a unified body of work such as a book or portfolio, to help prepare the student for his/her senior show, and to facilitate entry into graduate school or the workplace. Prerequisite: ART 483.

  • ART 583 Photography VI
  • Concentrated exploration of individual problems, culminating in a unified body of work such as a book or portfolio. Individual expression, discussion and criticism. Prerequisite: ART 584.

  • ART 584 Photography VII
  • Continuation of ART 583. Prerequisite: ART 583.

 
Facilities
 

  The photography area has 2,846 square feet of studio space open 24 hours a day. The space includes individual darkroom spaces for students with an emphasis in this discipline.
