Wood
 

  The sculpture program offers a range of experiences in making three-dimensional art objects in a well-equipped studio. The studio accommodates the additive, subtractive and transformation processes.Equipment for arc, tig and oxygen-acetylene welding is provided for the teaching of additive methods. For the transformation process, there is an excellent foundry for casting bronze and aluminum, including facilities for several mould-making techniques. For subtractive methods, there is equipment for stone and plaster carving.

 

  Classes offered as part of the emphasis include:

  • ART 310 Introduction to Wood I

  • Three-dimensional design as it relates to ideas, tools, materials and processes. The student designs projects which integrate aesthetics and function using a variety of materials and processes. ART 112 is a prerequisite for art majors only.

  • ART 313 Wood II
  • Exploration of functional design with an emphasis on development of personal direction in design. Advanced methods of construction and techniques will be taught. Prerequisite: ART 310.

  • ART 314 Wood III
  • Advanced problems in functional design. Chair and table construction will be emphasized in this class. Prerequisite: ART 313.

  • ART 413 Wood IV
  • Advanced problems in functional design. Complex carcass and drawer construction will be emphasized. Prerequisite: ART 314.

  • ART 414 Wood V
  • Advanced problems in functional design. Students will design and build functional pieces of their choosing. Prerequisite: ART 413.

  • ART 513 Wood VI
  • Advanced problems in wood. Students will design and build wood pieces of their choosing. Prerequisite: ART 414.

  • ART 514 Wood VII
  • Advanced problems in wood. Students will design and build wood pieces of their choosing. Prerequisite: ART 513.

 
Facilities
 

  Wood has 4,250 square feet of studio space open 24 hours a day. Individual studio spaces for students with an emphasis in the discipline are also available.
