Professional Development

Two SJCJC faculty were selected to the fall 2003 cohort of doctoral students in Curriculum and Instruction at Valdosta State University; these faculty will become essential support for our growing Teacher Education Department

Dale Young, physics lecturer of SJCJC traveled to Colorado State University in April 2003 to learn new teaching strategies in physics; he traveled with Brian Jones’ Little Shop of Physics and secured, on a “long-term loan” from CSU, eight computers for use in our physics department

SJCJC hosted a workshop for ATLIB Librarians, coordinated the Summer CAFÉ Workshops with Adrienne Hyle of Oklahoma State University, and coordinated the COBEC Workshop for Counselors of ATLIB school

Student/Faculty Exchanges

This summer, Dr. Cynthia Bickley-Green, an Art professor from East Carolina University, led a class in SJC’s summer institute for teachers entitled “The Teaching of Math & Science Concepts through Art”; she also delivered two presentations on distance education opportunities at ECU and she took part in different outreach activities in art

The project with Metropolitan Community College involving an SJCJC student taking an on-line course given by MCC got off to a difficult start. The timing of the course which began in early May conflicted with the student’s final exam schedule and her preparation for A-level exams; she made a decision to withdraw from the course. Nonetheless, this remains an avenue for potential collaboration.

Study Abroad

Not a Semester Abroad but a Semester Within! SJCJC is working with Jaguar Creek (a candidate for COBEC membership) to recruit students for a wonderful opportunity to study Sustainable Development, Latin American History & Geography, God and Nature, Field Biology, and take part in a supervised internship at Jaguar Creek’s Environmental Field Station near Belmopan. SJCJC is working with Jaguar Creek to develop transfer credit equivalencies and students may very well be able to use this “Semester Within” to meet a semester’s worth of general and professional core requirements.

Other Partnerships

The President of SJC has engaged the Registrar’s Office at Georgia College & State University to solicit assistance with our plan for developing a comprehensive enrollment management strategy; initial meetings took place during the July COBEC Conference
