The generous gifts of Murray State University graduate Arthur J. Bauernfeind enabled the completion of the Susan E. Bauernfeind Student Recreation and Wellness Center, one of the university’s greatest structural enhancements in many years. Officially dedicated April 16, 2005, more than 1,500 students, faculty, staff and community members use the facility daily, located just behind Stewart Stadium and the Regional Special Events Center.
Susan E. Bauernfeind, the late daughter of Bauernfeind, was an avid athlete. “Susan would be greatly honored to have her name on this building and all that it represents at Murray State,” Bauernfeind said at the center’s dedication ceremony. The 73,000-square-foot state-of-the-art center contains a swimming pool featuring lap and leisure swim areas, two racquetball courts, a walking/jogging track and a café and lounge with internet access.
In addition, the center houses an aerobic studio with hardwood floors, mirrors, ballet bars, sound system, free weights and cardio workout machines. The facility has men’s and women’s locker rooms and a multi-purpose room for meetings, classes and workout sessions.
Bauernfeind has distinguished himself in the financial industry, rising to his current position as Chairman of Westfield Capital Management of Boston. The company supervises growth equity portfolios across the capitalization spectrum totaling more than $12 billion in assets under management.
Since graduating from MSU in 1960, Bauernfeind has continually supported the university. He is currently the Chairman of the MSU Foundation Board of Trustees and has served as a chapter president of the Murray State Alumni Association. In 1996 he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from MSU, and in 1998 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters.
He has given many significant gifts to the university including the establishment of the Arthur J. Bauernfeind Endowed Chair of Investment Management. The Master of Business Administration program at MSU is also named for Bauernfeind. To read more about the Arthur J. Bauernfeind MBA program, click here: http://www.murraystate.edu/qacd/cbpa/mba
