Martin, Tenn. assaults
The Martin Tennessee Police Department is currently investigating a series of sexual assaults. Although there is no evidence of a connection to Murray, we would like to take this opportunity to remind the campus community to follow some basic personal safety tips, such as:
Be aware of your surroundings.
- Walk or jog with a friend or with a group, especially after dark.
- If walking or traveling alone, let some one know where you are going and when you plan to arrive.
- Keep police emergency numbers programmed into your phone (MSU Police, 809-2222; Murray City Police, 753-1621; or 911)
- Never prop open doors, especially fire doors.
- If you observe a suspicious person, report it to the police immediately.
- Learn the locations of the blue light emergency telephones on campus.
- Walk on well lit designated walkways.
- Know the location of the University Police Department (corner of North 16th and Chestnut Streets) and other safe areas.
- If you suspect that you are being followed, turn or cross the street. If you are being followed, use a blue light emergency phone, campus phone, or cell phone to call the police. Find a safe area such as an office, highly visible area, or a place where there are people who can see you.
- Do not give your keys away. Keys can be duplicated. Always keep your keys in your possession.
- Require photo identification from maintenance and utility workers prior to allowing them access to your house or office.
- Do not let a stranger into your house, even if the stranger states that it is an emergency. Instead, offer to make a call for help.
- Leave a light on at home when you are away.
- Keep doors and windows locked when away and while inside.
- Check the backseat of your vehicle before entering by looking through the window. Counseling and information is also available through the MSU Women's Center at 809-3140.
