FRE 2009 Book

Entering Freshman – Fall 2009

www.nedvizzini.com

The 2009 FRE book is It’s Kind of a Funny Story, by New York author Ned Vizzini.  This novel tells the story of Craig Gilner’s acceptance into a prestigious and competitive pre-professional school, and his subsequent response to overwhelming pressure. When Craig becomes depressed and then suicidal, he checks himself into a psychiatric wing of a local hospital, and in the process, discovers or rediscovers abilities and options he didn’t realize he had.

As It’s Kind of a Funny Story follows Craig’s struggle with academic and social pressures and a stifling definition of success, we find that the novel is also a story about the power of self expression and hope.  Craig reevaluates his awareness of what it takes to solve problems, his beliefs about happiness and success, and even his own identity.  In the end, Craig’s rediscovery of his own artistic interests and love of map-making allow him to draw his own road map to recovery.

At Murray State, all incoming first-year students are requested to read this text during the summer before their arrival on campus. Reading the same book is a great way to meet new friends and to create links among your fall classes.
