Edward
McFarland , M.D .
’78 has been promoted to full professor at The Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine. The 1998 Distinguished Alumnus recipient earned
his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of
Medicine in 1982 and completed his residency and training in orthopedic
surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Roc hester
, Minn. , in 1987.
McFarland
joined Johns Hopkins in 1992, where he created and directed The
Johns Hopkins Division of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery
before taking on responsibilities in 2002 as director of the Division
of Adult Orthopedics. He also is vice chairman of the Department
of Orthopedic Surgery.
McFarland,
a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and of
the American College of Sports Medicine, and consulting orthopedic
surgeon for the Baltimore Orioles, recently published “Examination
of the Shoulder: The Complete Guide.”
Assisting
McFarland with the book was Richard Blalock II, a 2006 Murray
State graduate. Blalock served as a normal model for shoulder
examinations and movement for the book’s photographs and also
reviewed chapters for accuracy of citations. He is attending Vanderbilt
University School of Medicine.
Dr.
Walter Bumphus
’71 ’74 president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College
System, has announced his resignation effective January 15, 2007
, to become a tenured full professor in the Department of Educational
Administration, with an Endowed Chair in the community college
leadership program at the University of Texas-Austin . Bumphus,
a native of Princeton , Ky. , received the Distinguished Alumnus
Award in 1992.
Bumphus
has had a long and distinguished career in two-year postsecondary
education. He has served as a college chancellor, a college president
and as a vice president and dean of students. He was originally
recruited to Louisiana to serve as chancellor of Baton Rouge Community
College . As a result of his strong leadership abilities, he was
tapped to provide vision and guidance for the entire Louisiana
Community and Technical College system, which consists of 10 colleges.
He
has received numerous awards including the Lifetime Achievement
Award, National Initiative for Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness
from North Carolina State University in 1998, the Distinguished
Graduate Award from the Community College Leadership Program at
the University of Texas at Austin in 1992, and most recently,
the Association of Community College Trustees 2005 Southern Region
Chief Executive Officer Award.
He
is married to the former Aileen Thompson ’72 ’73.
