Meena
Shams, a 1997 alumna of Murray State University , is proud to be
an Oakland Raiderette. A former MSU cheerleader, Shams has carried
her undying Racer spirit to this elite professional squad.
Originally
from Bardstown , Ky. , Shams moved to California in 1998 after receiving
her bachelor of science degree in exercise science. Her father,
brother and several relatives are also MSU graduates. As a student,
Shams was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and the first
cheerleading squad in MSU history to qualify for national championships.
Shams
was selected from a preliminary group of over 500 contestants to
join the 36 member squad. Raiderette tryouts are a two week-long
process, including multiple interview, dance and cheer portions.
Each contestant’s ability to maintain poise and strength throughout
this intimidating process is crucial to her success.
In
addition to cheering on the sidelines, Shams attends several charitable
and fundraising events, as well as corporate sponsor events each
year. Raiderettes are expected to be well-rounded, positive role
models, as well as skilled performers.
Most
of all, Shams loves her fans, teammates and coaches. “Our fans are
the most passionate in sports,” said Shams. “They will show up the
night before a game and park their cars in line to get into the
stadium to tail gate.” A favorite part of the games for Shams comes
during the quarter breaks at “The Black Hole,” located in the end
zone. Here the most passionate Raider fans dress up in head-to-toe
silver and black.
Shams
has also worked as a personal trainer in California for nine years,
and is a certified Pilates instructor. She teaches a mix of group
classes as well as one-on-one personal training. |
