Owens, Qu present findings at broadcast convention

Dr. Debbie Owens and outstanding graduate student Rui Qu traveled to the Broadcast Education Convention in Las Vegas in April

Qu presented her paper "Women in TV News in China: Presence, Story Assignment, and Source Selection" at a Scholar-to-Scholar poster session. She examined episodes of CCTV News in China.

Qu also presented her paper at a research "hot spot" session during Scholars Week held on campus in April. She developed the research project in Dr. Debbie Owens' Seminar on Media, Culture, Gender and Race during fall 2008.

Dr. Debbie Owens presented her research on audience analysis of film in two separate sessions at the convention.

In a session titled "Race/Gender/Media: Bringing Research to the Classroom" Dr. Owens discussed "Audience Interpretations of the film 'Crash.'"

In a session titled "Images on Screen: How Gender Based Stereotypes on Screen Can Influence Life Decisions" Dr. Owens discussed "Media Representations of a Cultural Divide: Gender and Race in the film 'Crash.'"

Owens is a contributing author for "Race/Gender/ Media-Considering Diversity Across Audiences, Content, and Producers," 2nd edition, Allyn & Bacon, 2010.

She concluded her third and final two-year term as a member of the BEA Publications Board.
