Communicators cover inauguration

Three members of Murray State's communications area participated in the January inauguration ceremonies in Washington. They were Katie DeCillo, Shasta O'Neal and Dr. Debbie Owens.

DeCillo, a sophomore electronic media major from Murray, and O'Neal, administrative secretary for Media Services, created and uploaded video packages and sound bites that aired on "Roundabout U," KFVS 12 and WPSD TV 6.

The week-long coverage highlighted activities from the "Kentucky on the Potomac" reception, presented by the Kentucky Democratic Party, and the Kentucky Bluegrass Ball, presented by the Kentucky Society of Washington.

O'Neal said University Communications contacted state representatives to get media access. "Our main goal was to provide information from the Kentucky political scene,"

DeCillo, who co-hosts "Roundabout U" with Jim Carter, also did a video blog that included interviews with MSU alumni in the Washington area.

Owens, associate professor in JMC, was invited to attend the inauguration and view the ceremony from the "silver standing" section at the tip of the Reflecting Pool.

She also attended a Volunteers Ball along with a number of individuals representing various non-profit organizations across the country.

When she returned, she shared her experiences with Jim Carter on "Roundabout U."
