Kentucky Educational Listservs

All information below is provided by the Kentucky Department of Education.

A LISTSERV is a program which automatically distributes an e-message from one member on the list to all other members on the list. When you subscribe to a list, your name and your Internet address are automatically added to the list. Usually, you will receive a standard letter (or "posting") about the list. From time to time, you will receive postings from the list. If you respond to the posting, your reply will go to every member of the list!

Here is a list of the current Kentucky educational listservs that are available.

HOW TO REACH A LISTSERV

In the Commonwealth, LISTSERVs are one of the ways to support communications among students, teachers, and adminstrators. From time to time, you will want to SUBscribe to a list or UNSUBscribe from a list. We encourage persons who are no longer interested in a discussion list to UNSUBSCRIBE. However, before the "old timers" leave a discussion list, we encourage them to help the "newcomers" to SUBSCRIBE appropriate lists. Thus, from your address do the following:

If you are subscribing to a discussion list, send mail to:

LISTSERV@LSV.UKY.EDU

with a text of:

SUBSCRIBE Listname YourName, District

If you are unsubscribing from a discussion list, send mail to:

LISTSERV@LSV.UKY.EDU

with a text of:

UNSUBSCRIBE Listname

and you will be removed from the list. The LISTSERV software will recognize your address in the heading of the posting.

If you have an address on MSMAIL and you want to subscribe to a discussion list, you will need to do the following steps:

  1. click on the Compose button
  2. click on the Address button
  3. click on the New Address button (Rolodex icon)
  4. click on SMTP
  5. insert the Alias, e.g., LISTSERV
  6. insert the address, i.e., LISTSERV@LSV.UKY.EDU
  7. click on the Add Names button to add LISTSERV to your Personal Address book
  8. return to the Compose screen
  9. select LISTSERV from your Personal Address book
  10. in order to subscribe to a list, your text is
    SUBSCRIBE Listname YourName, District
  11. send your posting through the SMTP gateway

The same sequence can be used to add an address to a person whose address is outside MSMAIL, e.g., president@whitehouse.gov or to add a discussion list, e.g., KYSUPT@LSV.UKY.EDU to your Personal Address book.
If you want to attach a document for distribution to beyond MSMAIL, you will need to store the document with the "Save As" option using either TEXT ONLY, TEXT ONLY WITH LINE BREAKS, or MS DOS TEXT. If you send the attached document in any other format, the document will be unreadable!
