Master of Arts in Teaching English
to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
   

The curriculum of the Murray State University Master of Arts Program in Teaching English to Speakers
of Other Languages (TESOL) is based on guidelines developed by TESOL, an international professional
organization, and on recognized programs at other institutions. It features instruction and
experiences that contribute directly to competencies in linguistics, language pedagogy, assessment,
and culture.

The M.A. in TESOL is in the Department of English and Philosophy in the College of Humanities and
Fine Arts. Doctorally-prepared faculty in linguistics, second language teaching, and related fields in
the departments of English and Philosophy and the English as a Second Language program teach
courses in the program. The TESOL Advisory Committee is made up of the Graduate Coordinator of
the M.A. in TESOL program, the Chair of English and Philosophy, and the TESOL faculty.

Typical Course Schedule
  Day 1   View multi-media CD introducing the instructor, the course
content and policies, and initial materials (1-2 hours total). 		   
  Days 2-17   Self-study and complete pre-seminar readings and
assignments. Communicate with instructor electronically. 		   
  Days 18-27   Seminars (36 hours total)    
  Days 28-41   Complete seminar assignments and prepare for final.    
 
  Day 42   Final Exam (4 hours)

Admission Requirements
  1. an undergraduate major in English or a modern foreign language or approval by the TESOL
    Advisory Committee
  2. at least 12 semester hours in one modern foreign language or demonstrated proficiency at
    that level (permission may be granted to complete this proficiency during the program; for
    non-native speakers, language may be English)
  3. for non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL score of 235 (575 on the paper-based test) or
    higher or a previous degree earned from an accredited institution in the United States or
    successful completion of Level 6 of the Murray State University English as a Second Language
    Program
  4. students who score between 195-234 on the TOEFL exam (between 525 and 574 on the
    paper-based test) but meet all other conditions for admittance may be admitted conditionally
    by the TESOL Advisory Committee.
