The season is now in full swing. We hope you are enjoying your membership to Miller Golf Course thus far. After a cool, wet start to the season, the climate has finally settled into its usual mode -- Hot and Humid. Needless to say, it appears most of you are enjoying your golf. This year we have many new faces and all of us at Miller G.C. would like to welcome you as members and hope you are reaping the benefits. We are fortunate to have such a great course to play. From a maintenance viewpoint the course is coming along well. The Bermuda grass got off to a slow start but is now growing strong. The hot, dry conditions are making for some fun golf. I'm sure many of you are hitting record breaking drives in the hard, fast conditions. As for the greens, we're moving into crunch time. The next 10 weeks are very demanding on a cool season grass!! These dry conditions are actually favorable for the bent grass greens because it allows us to control the amount of water on the greens via irrigation thus reducing the likelihood of diseases. Practice Green Update As most of you witnessed last year, we sprigged the practice green with Champion Bermuda. It is a relatively new ultra dwarf Bermuda grass specific to putting green use. Until now it has been difficult to assess its success. The idea of having Bermuda over the bent grass we currently have is that being a warm season grass it can tolerate low mowing heights in mid summer, resulting in fast greens in July and August!! Something we are not accustomed to with the bent grass. From a maintenance view point, the Champion Bermuda will be far less expensive to maintain chemically, but more labor intensive as it requires more top dressing and verticutting. I would encourage all of you to stop by at some point to chip and putt on this new grass. We would certainly welcome your feedback and one day we may have 18 more like it! Hole In One Club We hope to fill this section with all your magical shots at Miller G.C. or even on your travels. |
