Miller Memorial Golf Course

Spring Newsletter
March 2008

Member Notes

Now that 2008 is well underway, we are looking forward to another exciting year at Miller Memorial Golf Course. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members and we are certainly happy to see our returning members already out on the golf course.

Two new programs designed to benefit you as a member are proving to be big successes. The “Unlimited Cart Fee” has undoubtedly made several of our members very pleased. While this program is not necessarily for everyone, the new “Member Referral Program” offers everyone a chance to save a little green on the greens! I encourage all of you to try to introduce a new member this spring. When you introduce a new member, you and the referred member receive a $50 discount on your dues. I hope you all agree that our membership fees really are the best value of any golf course in the area.

Member/Guest Spring Cookout & Potluck
Saturday April 12, 2:00 pm

We already have some new members, and I know many of you travel during the winter months so the Member/Guest Spring Cookout & Potluck will be a great opportunity to meet the new members and catch up with each other. I would like you to invite a guest if possible (but it’s not a necessity). This would be a good time to tell someone about the Member Referral Program. Remember to bring a side dish to share! We will provide the burgers and the hot dogs. The cookout will begin at 2:00 pm at the pavilion, that way you can play golf prior to joining us.

New Golf Events for 2008

In an effort to allow members to play together on Saturdays in a somewhat competitive format, we are going to start a member points tournament. If you are familiar with the Friday Senior League play you will already understand the format. Basically, a player receives points for bogeys, pars, birdies and those oh-so-rare eagles, then totaling your points for the round. The idea is that you make your own foursome (we recognize the fact that many of you like to play within your own group), or allow us to pair you with a group, then players will be divided into teams by a blind draw. The team with the best score will be the winner. No handicap is necessary to compete. The first event is scheduled for March 22, with tee times starting at 9:00 am. It will be important to sign up in advance so we can block off the appropriate number of tee times. In addition to the cart fee, there will be a $5 charge for the prize pool.

I am happy to report that we already have had many favorable comments on this new endeavor and we look forward to it being a great success. If you have any questions please call the Pro Shop (809-2238).

Men’s Invitational – July 26 & 27

Men, mark your calendars. Already in its third year, this event continues to grow. Your support of the Men’s Invitational has really contributed to the success of this tournament, whether you have participated as a player or have volunteered your services. In our first year we had 106 players and that number grew to 125 last year. This tournament is rapidly becoming one of the area’s best invitationals.

Club Championship – June 21 & 22

We have moved the date of this year’s Club Championship to June 21 & 22 to make accommodations for Father’s Day. I hope you find this date to be more suitable to your schedule. Greg Lassiter (Club Champion 2007) and Jeremy Snodgrass (Senior Club Champion 2007) will be looking to defend their respective titles.

Friday Couples Golf

One of the most successful new events of 2007 was the Couples Golf Scramble. With the expected growth of the group, we are happy to have Andy & Karen Balzer take the helm to coordinate this year’s event schedule. I would like to thank them in advance for taking this role.

The idea has been passed around to hopefully have an exchange with Murray C.C. and Oaks C.C. where we will invite their couples to join us and vise versa. As soon as we have a beginning date an email will be sent out.

Tuesday Night Scrambles

The time change is nearly here and longer daylight hours mean that we can begin our Tuesday Night Scrambles. The initial date is set for March 25 with an anticipated start time of 5:00 – 5:15 pm. These scrambles are open to both members and non-members.
