Few things are more
important to the future success of your advisees than connecting them to the
help and support services they need. Over
a hundred people in more than a dozen offices on campus are dedicated to
helping students through whatever obstacles they may encounter while at
college. They will help your advisee over academic hurdles, assist them in
finding career opportunities, and listen when they are just plain
overwhelmed. As a faculty mentor, your
role is to help the student make the connections they need and nudge them
into action. If you refer your advisee
to another office for assistance, be certain the student knows the name of
the person they need to see, where to go, what questions to ask, and how to
act on the information they receive. Make notes in the student file and the
next time you see your advisee, ask them about the referral.
