***Special Alert--May 2, 2008--Shooting Near Campus***

At Murray State University, we are committed to your safety.  This alert is to heighten your awareness of safety issues.

At approximately 5:40 am at 1635 Farmer Avenue, a shooting occurred.  One black male ran from the residence and was located later and transported to Murray-Calloway County Hospital emergency room with a gunshot wound to his leg.  Police are searching for another black male who ran from the residence.  Additional information will follow as it becomes available.

The suspect mentioned in the previous alert regarding the Farmer Avenue shooting is now in police custody.

***Special Alert--April 8, 2008--Robberies at Local Convenience Stores***

At Murray State University, we are committed to your safety.  This alert is to heighten your awareness of safety issues.

At approximately 11:21 p.m. on April 7, Speedway convenience store on College Farm Road (Five Points) and subsequently at 1:49 a.m. on April 8, Pocket's convenience store at 12th and Chestnut Street were robbed.  The suspect was described as a white male, 5'8", and slim build with short blond hair wearing blue jeans and a gray t-shirt.  The suspect displayed no weapon during either of the robberies.  Students are advised to take additional precautions.

Updated Information (April 8, 2008) for the Murray State University Community- Update to Robberies at Local Convenience Stores

A person (non-student) has been arrested off-campus in connection with the two robberies for which a special notice was sent earlier today.

***Special Alert--February 12, 2008--Burned Paper Discovered in Hart College***

On February 12, 2008, at 7:52 a.m., burned paper was discovered on a door on the 3rd floor of Hart College. Murray State Police, State Fire Marshall Office and the Kentucky State Police Arson unit are investigating this incident. An initial investigation revealed that paper decorations on as many as five doors may have been burned as early as one week ago. Setting a fire in a building is a serious threat to the safety of all residents and a violation of state law.

Updated Information (February 27, 2008) for the Murray State University Community- Update to Burned Paper Discovered in Hart College

Murray State Police have charged two students for the burning of paper decordations on the 3rd floor of Hart College.  Jared Lucas and Shawn Bishop are charged with 2nd Degree Wanton Endangerment, a Class A Misdemeanor.  The setting of any fire in a Residential College is regarded as a threat to all residents.

***Special Alert--November 28, 2007--Fire at Old Fine Arts***

At Murray State University , we are committed to your safety.   This alert is to heighten your awareness of safety issues.

 

On Wednesday, November 28, 2007 , at approximately 5:52 a.m. , the University Police responded to a report of a smell of smoke in Old Fine Arts Building.   Upon arrival, a fire was discovered in a trashcan located in room 1004.   The fire was extinguished by the Facilities Management Staff member who discovered the fire. The trash can and several floor tiles were damaged.   The cause of the fire is not known at this time and is under investigation by the University Police, Murray City Fire Department, and the Kentucky State Fire Marshall’s Office.

Updated Information (November 29, 2007) for the Murray State University Community--Update to Fire at Old Fine Arts

Although the cause of the fire is undetermined, no evidence has been found to indicate the fire was intentionally set.

***Special Alert--August 23, 2007--Death Investigation at College Courts***

August 23, 2007, at approximately 8:20 a.m., Ellen "Katie" Driver, age 24, of Farmington, Kentucky, was found deceased, hanging behind the 800 block of College Courts apartments.  The Calloway County Coroner and the Murray State Police continue to investigate the death. Anyone with information about this or other incidents is asked to contact the Murray State University Public Safety Department at (270) 809-2222.
 
MSU President Randy Dunn has issued the following statement:
“The University Family extends our deepest sympathies at this tragic loss, which is felt by many of our students, faculty and staff.  Our counselors are providing help and support for the campus community, and we are keeping Ms. Driver’s family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.”
 
Staff members from the MSU Counseling and Testing Center (270) 809-6851 are available to help individuals in the campus community in coping with this tragedy.  MSU students, faculty, and staff are invited to encourage friends or colleagues who may be experiencing distress to make use of campus counseling services.
 
“It is important that people go to places and groups that they feel supported by and safe with at times such as these,” according to Dr. Bill Allbritten, director of the Counseling and Testing Center.  “We encourage members of the university to take advantage of not only the services of our counseling center, but also the Campus Ministries, and the support of friends and family.”

Updated Information (August 24, 2007) for the Murray State University Community--Update to Death Investigation at College Courts
 
Shortly after noon today, August 24, 2007, Calloway County Coroner Mike Garland issued a statement regarding the death of Murray State University student Ellen "Katie" Driver. The statement says, "Ms. Ellen 'Katie' Driver, age 24, of Murray, died of asphyxiation due to hanging. Ms. Driver's manner of death is ruled suicide. At this time no foul play is suspected. Law enforcement is awaiting further test results."
 
In the aftermath of this tragedy, members of the university community are reminded that counseling is available on campus by contacting the Counseling and Testing Center (270-809-6851), which is located in Ordway Hall. In addition, MSU students, faculty and staff are encouraged to urge friends or colleagues who may be experiencing distress to make use of those counseling services.
 
The investigation by the MSU police is continuing.
