OPERATION IDENTIFICATION

     campus watch

The Murray State University Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management offers a program title “Operation ID.”   This program has been in the law enforcement tool box for many years and continues to be a significant crime prevention and recovery method.

The Department will assist the university community in protecting both personal and university property from theft and increase the chances of recovery if stolen.   Methods such as Operation ID and individual diligence to protect their property do in fact deter crimes of opportunity.

The Department implements Operation ID in two ways:

•  Members of the university community can check out an electric engraver, free of charge, for a maximum of two days.

•  Department police officers (University Police) will conduct Operation ID sessions during the academic year.   Officers will engrave and document personal property.

Simple rules:

•  Use your driver’s license number as your engraved identifying mark on the property.   DO NOT use your social security number.  EXAMPLE:   KYN97-192-333                                                               engraver

•  Mark property in at least two locations.   Both locations should not be on removable

parts.

•  Use the property documentation form (provided by the Public Safety Department).

•  Mark anything of value.   Mark televisions, stereos, cameras, calculators, bicycles, etc.

•  If marking the item will damage, destroy it’s usefulness or detract from its value do not mark it.

•  Expensive items should be photographed.

•  If you sell the marked item tell the new owner to make a single line through your

engraved identifying number and mark their identifying number below it.

To setup a program or for more information contact the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management at 2222 (on campus) or 809-2222 (off campus).
