   TRAINING

Public Safety Department officers are sworn peace officers in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and exercise full authority to enforce criminal and traffic laws.

All Public Safety Department officers assigned to the University Police are graduates of the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training Basic Police Academy and hold certified Peace Officer status. All police officers in Kentucky are required to be “certified” through the Kentucky Peace Officer Professional Standards.

Officers attend a minimum of forty (40) hours in-service training annually. Training encompasses patrol, traffic, investigative, supervision and management according to the officer’s assignment.

Additional training is conducted at the department level and includes policy and procedure, contingency responses, firearms and non-lethal force, leadership and decision-making and current programs or initiatives.

University Police officers participate in the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council Career Development Program. Officers complete required courses, possess required service time, and attain a level of demonstrated/documented expertise in career specific career areas.
