The Department is one of only 109 programs in the United States fully-accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). In May 2004, the Department received its most recent six-year reaccreditation. Programs and majors are reviewed frequently and updated to reflect national academic and professional needs.

TV studios
JMC students gain time on both sides of the camera at MSU TV-11. The department's channel broadcasts on local cable systems and features several hours of student programming weekly.
