DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

WELCOME

Murray State's chemistry programs are designed to prepare students for careers in chemistry and related professions. The department is fully certified by the American Chemical Society's Committee on Professional Training. In addition, the Student Affiliates chapter of the American Chemical Society at Murray State has been recognized as being one of the most outstanding chapters in the nation.

The Area in Chemistry program is a thorough program designed for students planning careers in engineering and the chemical industry, or for those who plan to pursue graduate study following the baccalaureate degree. Students in the area program are not required to complete a minor course of study. Upon completion of this program, graduates are certified as professional chemists and are eligible for full membership in the American Chemical Society.

The Major in Chemistry program is recommended for students planning careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, secondary education, toxicology, or in programs where requirements make it difficult to include all the courses needed for an area in chemistry. The major in chemistry is coupled with a minor in a discipline appropriate to the career interests of the student. A major in chemistry with emphasis on biochemistry is also offered. This major must be accompanied by the minor in biology.

The Five-Year B. S./ M. S. program is an option enabling area or major students in chemistry to complete a master's degree with one additional year of study (as contrasted to the usual two-year period) beyond the baccalaureate degree. Students interested in this program should contact the chair of the department no later than the beginning of their junior year.

Each fall the department conducts a chemistry scholarship tournament for high school seniors with cash awards and prizes totaling approximately $1500. Other departmental scholarships are available to deserving students. Students interested in financial aid in chemistry, or any other aspect of the chemistry program should contact the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Murray State University, 456 Blackburn Science Building, Murray, KY 42071-3346, phone 270-809-2584. or judy.ratliff@murraystate.edu
