Minerals can be classified on their crystalline structure or their atoms internal arrangement.  The basic building block for silicate minerals is the silica tetrahedron.  A silicon tetrahedron by sharing oxygen can form more complex arrangements.  Additional complexities of crystal structure arise if Al is substituted for Si.  Tetrahedral types remain the same but chemical formulas become more complex with Al substitution.
