THE FIVE-ACRE WOODS

Long-term Measurements

Indicators that might be tracked and that would monitor long-term environmental changes were planned by the teacher-faculty project team. The present list includes growth of trees, diversity of understory plants, water and soil pH, air and ground temperature, numbers and kinds of bird nests, small mammal populations (mice and squirrels), kinds of insects, soil organic matter content, depth of the pond, kinds of aquatic invertebrates, numbers and kinds of frogs and toads, and light intensity at the ground.
