GRADUATE DEGREES REQUIREMENTS

 
All graduate programs in mathematics are planned in close consultation with the student's advisory committee and are subject to its approval.

 

DEGREE: Master of Arts in Teaching in Mathematics (M.A.T.)
This program fulfills the requirements for Rank II Classification.
(see also: Master of Arts Education with Mathematics Specialization, below)

Requirements for Admission
Applicants must meet the Murray State University requirements (see the MSU Graduate Bulletin, chapter 2). Additional requirements:

Unconditional
Minor in mathematics.  Completion of requirements for teaching certification.

Conditional
See MSU requirements (MSU Graduate Bulletin, chapter 2) and conditional admission requirements (MSU Graduate Bulletin, chapter 5) for certification.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:


The Master of Arts in Teaching program is designed for certified teachers who wish to strengthen their background in mathematics and keep up with current information in educational theory, curriculum and research. The program provides for both reasonable depth in the mathematics area and graduate-level exposure in supporting disciplines. The education component is designed to meet the requirements for the standard certificate. A departmental adviser and an advisory committee must be established during the first semester of residence. There is no comprehensive examination or thesis requirement.

NON-THESIS TRACK (ONLY)

Total Course Requirements: 36 hours
MAT courses, 600 level: 3 hours
MAT courses, 500 or 600 level: 15-18 hours
Courses in supporting field of science, 500 or 600 level: 0-3 hours
Education Courses:
ADM 630 Methods of Educational Research: 3 hours
EDU 631 Motivation and Learning Theory: 3 hours
EDU 633 Curriculum Development: 3 hours
EDU 645 History of Education in the United States: 3 hours
EDU 649 Research in Education: 3 hours

Other Degree Requirements
A student portfolio is required.

DEGREE: Master of Science in Mathematics

Requirements for Admission
Applicants must meet the Murray State University requirements (see the MSU Graduate Bulletin, chapter 2). Additional requirements:

Unconditional
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college with a major (or the equivalent) in mathematics. Overall GPA of 3.0 or above in all mathematics courses beginning with the last elementary calculus course.

Conditional
Recommendation of the student's advisory committee.


DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

THESIS TRACK

Total Course Requirements: 33 hours*

MAT courses, 600 level: 9 hours
MAT courses, 500 or 600 level: 6-18 hours
Allied field, 500 or 600 level: 0-12 hours
MAT 698-699 Research and Thesis: 6 hours

Other Degree Requirements
Oral defense and examination of thesis.

*Must include at least 14 hours of 600 level courses, excluding thesis.


NON-THESIS TRACK

Total Course Requirements: 33 hours*

MAT courses, 600 level: 15 hours
MAT courses, 500 or 600 level: 6 hours
Allied field, 500 or 600 level: 12 hours

Other Degree Requirements
Comprehensive examination over course work.

*Must include at least 17 hours of 600 level courses.

Comprehensive examination in the areas of algebra, analysis, topology and other course work.

*It is strongly recommended that at least one each from algebra, analysis and topology is taken.

Students seeking the M.A.Ed. in secondary education may complete a mathematics specialization with 12 hours of 500 or 600 level mathematics courses.

Note that this is a program of the College of Education.
